National Survey of Non-Communicable Diseases Risk Factors in 2016 (STEPs)

What Is STEPs

The stepwise approach to the surveillance of risk factors of chronic non-communicable diseases is an appropriate response which helps to achieve an overview of the status of risk factors for non-communicable diseases. This initiative focuses on continuous collection of information. It has three steps including the following: data collection using a questionnaire (first step), completing the required data via physical examinations (second step), and conducting laboratory measurements (third step).

Objectives of the project

    1. To determine the prevalence of major preventable risk factors of non-communicable diseases in Iran (including: smoking, poor nutrition, low physical activity, high blood pressure, overweight and obesity, high blood glucose, and high blood lipids) by age and sex groups
    2. To determine the trend of major preventable risk factors of non-communicable diseases in Iran by age and sex groups based on data generated from the annual studies

  • Samples under study: 31000 subjects
